Kansa: The Forgotten Alloy

Copper and tin, combined into a metal with its own separate tradition in South Asian wellness practice.

A Nataraja figure, Ayurvedic and yoga texts, and a copper bottle and tumbler beside a wood panel carved with calligraphy.

Kansa is a bronze alloy — copper and tin, sometimes with trace amounts of other metals — with a distinct craft tradition from pure copperwork, most closely associated with West Bengal. It shows up in temple objects, cookware, and, most relevant to us, in small massage tools used in facial and foot rituals.

The tools are simple: a rounded wand or a shallow bowl, used with a small amount of oil in slow, repeated strokes. We present this the way we present everything else in the Wellness collection — as a genuine cultural practice worth knowing about, not as a clinical treatment.
